An Open Letter in Support of Passage of the state Constitutional Amendment
We are medical and mental health professionals from Kansas. As doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, and pharmacists, we stand united to care for the physical health and emotional well-being of patients in hospitals, clinics, and private offices.
We serve patients daily, embracing core professional principles to protect informed consent and, above all, to do no harm. Informed consent is an essential tenet of respect for a person’s dignity. As professionals, we stand united and resolved that patients be provided all relevant facts about any intervention that may alter their life or body. Drawn to the service of humanity, our life’s work is dedicated to healing and rejects actions that will cause irreversible harm.
These principles lay the foundation for our stand as medical and mental health professionals in support of the Kansas Value Them Both constitutional amendment.
Passage of the Value Them Both Amendment is essential to protect existing state laws that have recently been or will otherwise soon be struck down due to a state court ruling in Hodes & Nauser v. Schmidt. These include:
• A Woman’s Right to Know Act (Informed consent)
• Abortion clinic health and safety standards, inspection and sanitation law
• Parental notification to protect teenage girls seeking abortion
• Other laws that impact patient safety
Without the Value Them Both Amendment, Kansas faces the imminent danger of becoming an abortion destination state with unregulated facilities providing unlimited abortions.
We believe it is time to truly stand for the health and right to information of women by supporting reasonable regulation of abortion through passage of the Value Them Both Amendment. We affirm the values of the vast majority of Kansans who understand the critical importance of protecting the lives of both mothers and preborn babies as well as the dangers posed by an unlimited abortion industry.
We urge Kansans to vote “Yes” on the Value Them Both Amendment on August 2 to prevent a broken state system that lacks laws and regulations for the protection of women’s health and well-being from the abortion industry.
